🎗️ Gynaecological Oncology Awareness Month: Know the Signs, Start the Conversation 💜
This Gynaecological Oncology Awareness Month, Donegal Women’s Centre is shining a light on gynaecological cancers and the importance of awareness, regular health checks, and seeking medical advice when something doesn’t feel right.
Gynaecological cancers can affect different parts of the female reproductive system, including the cervix, ovaries, womb, vulva, and vagina. Knowing the signs and being aware of changes in your body can help women feel more informed and confident about their health.
đź’ś Know Your Body
Women know their own bodies best. While many symptoms can have causes other than cancer, it is important not to ignore persistent or unusual changes.
Depending on the type of cancer, symptoms may include:
- Unusual or persistent vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Bleeding after sex or after menopause
- Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain
- Ongoing bloating or changes in abdominal size
- Changes in bladder or bowel habits
- Unexplained weight loss or ongoing tiredness
- Changes to the skin around the vulva
Having these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but if you notice something unusual, persistent, or concerning, speak with your GP or healthcare professional.
🩺 Health Checks Matter
Looking after your health includes attending recommended screening and health appointments.
In Ireland, cervical screening is an important part of women’s healthcare. Keeping up to date with screening can help detect changes early, before they may develop into cervical cancer.
It is also important to remember that screening does not replace speaking to a healthcare professional about symptoms. If you are concerned about a change in your health, don’t wait for your next screening appointment — seek medical advice.
🗣️ Let’s Talk About Women’s Health
Conversations about gynaecological health can sometimes feel difficult or uncomfortable, but talking openly can help reduce embarrassment, increase awareness, and encourage women to seek support when they need it.
Whether you’re supporting a friend, family member, colleague, or loved one, a simple conversation can make a difference.
Listen. Encourage. Support.
🎗️ Supporting Women Affected by Cancer
A cancer diagnosis can affect every part of a person’s life. Alongside physical treatment, women may experience emotional, practical, financial, and relationship challenges.
Showing compassion, listening without judgement, and helping women access appropriate support can make a meaningful difference.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we believe that women should feel informed, supported, and empowered to take care of their health and wellbeing.
Together, We Can Raise Awareness
This Gynaecological Oncology Awareness Month, let’s encourage women to know the signs, attend appropriate health checks, have open conversations, and seek professional advice when they have concerns.
Awareness can empower. Conversation can support. Early action can make a difference. đź’ś
