🎗️ Mouth Cancer Awareness Day: Know the Signs, Take Action 💜
Today, Donegal Women’s Centre recognises Mouth Cancer Awareness Day and the importance of raising awareness about mouth cancer, its possible signs and symptoms, and the value of seeking professional advice when something doesn’t feel right.
Greater awareness can help people become more familiar with changes in their mouth and understand when it is important to speak with a healthcare professional.
đź’ś Know the Signs
Mouth cancer can affect different areas of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and the roof or floor of the mouth.
Possible signs and symptoms can include:
- 🎗️ A mouth ulcer that does not heal
- 🎗️ A red or white patch in the mouth
- 🎗️ An unusual lump, swelling, or thickening
- 🎗️ Persistent pain or discomfort in the mouth
- 🎗️ Unexplained bleeding or numbness
- 🎗️ Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue
- 🎗️ Persistent changes to the voice or a sore throat
- 🎗️ A persistent swelling in the neck
These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily mean that someone has mouth cancer. However, persistent or unusual changes should not be ignored.
If you notice something that concerns you, speak with your GP, dentist, or another appropriate healthcare professional.
🩺 Early Detection Matters
Being aware of changes in your mouth and seeking advice early can help ensure that any concerns are assessed appropriately.
Regular dental check-ups can also provide an opportunity for your dentist to identify changes that may need further investigation.
Taking a few moments to pay attention to your oral health is an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing.
🗣️ Let’s Talk About Mouth Cancer
Talking openly about cancer can help reduce fear and stigma and encourage people to seek help when they need it.
We can support one another by sharing reliable information, encouraging loved ones to get persistent symptoms checked, and showing compassion to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.
For those living with mouth cancer, treatment and recovery can bring physical, emotional, and practical challenges. A supportive community can make a meaningful difference.
Together, We Can Raise Awareness
This Mouth Cancer Awareness Day, let’s remember that knowing the signs, paying attention to changes, and seeking professional advice can all play an important role in protecting our health.
Let’s continue to encourage conversations, promote health awareness, and support individuals and families affected by cancer. đź’ś
