🎗️ World Gynaecological Oncology Day: Raising Awareness & Supporting Women 💜
Today, Donegal Women’s Centre recognises World Gynaecological Oncology Day and the importance of raising awareness about gynaecological cancers and supporting women affected by them.
This day is an opportunity to encourage women to learn about their health, recognise changes in their bodies, attend appropriate health checks, and feel confident seeking professional advice when something doesn’t feel right.
đź’ś Know the Signs
Gynaecological cancers can affect different parts of the female reproductive system, including the cervix, ovaries, womb, vulva, and vagina.
Possible symptoms can vary depending on the type of cancer but may include:
- 🎗️ Unusual or persistent vaginal bleeding or discharge
- 🎗️ Bleeding after sex or after menopause
- 🎗️ Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain
- 🎗️ Ongoing bloating or changes in abdominal size
- 🎗️ Changes in bladder or bowel habits
- 🎗️ Unexplained weight loss or persistent tiredness
- 🎗️ Changes to the skin around the vulva
These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily mean cancer. However, persistent or unusual changes should be discussed with a GP or healthcare professional.
🩺 Health Checks Matter
Looking after your health includes attending recommended screening and healthcare appointments.
Cervical screening is an important part of women’s healthcare in Ireland and can identify changes that may develop into cervical cancer.
It is also important to remember that screening is not designed to investigate every symptom. If you notice a concerning change in your health, seek medical advice rather than waiting for your next screening appointment.
🗣️ Let’s Talk About Gynaecological Health
Conversations about gynaecological health can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but talking openly can help reduce stigma and encourage women to seek advice when they need it.
Whether it’s speaking to a healthcare professional, supporting a friend, or simply sharing reliable information, every conversation can help increase awareness.
We can create an environment where women feel comfortable asking questions and talking about their health without embarrassment or judgement.
đź’ś Supporting Women Affected by Cancer
A gynaecological cancer diagnosis can have a significant impact on a woman’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
Treatment and recovery can bring many challenges, and women may also experience concerns around relationships, family, work, finances, body image, and mental health.
Families and loved ones may need support too.
Compassion, understanding, and access to appropriate services can help women and their families navigate these difficult experiences.
Together, We Can Raise Awareness
This World Gynaecological Oncology Day, let’s encourage women to know the signs, attend appropriate health checks, have open conversations, and seek professional advice when they have concerns.
Let’s also stand alongside every woman affected by gynaecological cancer and recognise the strength of her family, friends, carers, and wider support network.
Awareness can empower. Early action can make a difference. Support can remind women that they are not alone. 💜🎗️
