💙 FASD Awareness Day: Understanding, Supporting & Including
Today, Donegal Women’s Centre recognises International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day and the importance of raising awareness, understanding, and support for individuals and families affected by FASD.
FASD refers to a range of lifelong effects that can occur when a developing baby is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. These effects can vary from person to person and may affect areas such as learning, communication, behaviour, attention, memory, and physical development.
Greater understanding can help us replace misconceptions with compassion and ensure that people affected by FASD are treated with dignity and respect.
💙 Raising Awareness Matters
Because FASD is often not immediately visible, individuals may face misunderstanding or judgement about challenges they experience.
Awareness can help us recognise that behaviour or difficulties may have underlying causes that are not always obvious.
Instead of judgement, we can choose to:
- 💙 Listen and learn
- 💙 Avoid assumptions and stigma
- 💙 Recognise that every person’s experience is different
- 💙 Encourage appropriate support and professional guidance
- 💙 Create inclusive and understanding environments
- 💙 Support families and carers who may need help navigating challenges
🌱 The Importance of Education
Education and reliable information are important tools in preventing misinformation and promoting informed choices.
FASD Awareness Day provides an opportunity to have respectful conversations about alcohol and pregnancy, encourage people to seek appropriate healthcare advice, and ensure that information is shared in a supportive rather than judgemental way.
It is also important to remember that people living with FASD deserve support throughout their lives. Understanding their individual needs can help create better opportunities for participation, learning, relationships, and wellbeing.
🤝 Supporting Individuals and Families
A diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of FASD can raise many questions for individuals and families. Access to appropriate services, professional advice, education, and community support can make a meaningful difference.
Creating a supportive community means recognising strengths as well as challenges and ensuring that people feel valued, included, and understood.
Together, We Can Create Greater Understanding
This International FASD Awareness Day, let’s continue to raise awareness, challenge stigma, share reliable information, and promote compassion.
By learning more about FASD, we can help create communities where individuals and families feel supported rather than judged.
Together, we can encourage understanding, inclusion, compassion, and informed choices. 💙
