💜 World Alzheimer’s Day: Understanding, Compassion & Support
Today, Donegal Women’s Centre recognises World Alzheimer’s Day and stands alongside everyone living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as well as their families, carers, friends, and wider support networks.
This day provides an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and remind us that behind every diagnosis is a person with their own life, experiences, relationships, and story.
💜 Understanding Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It can affect memory, thinking, communication, and everyday activities, but the experience is different for every individual.
As dementia progresses, people may need increasing levels of support. However, a diagnosis does not take away a person’s identity, dignity, or value.
Taking time to understand dementia can help us respond with greater patience, empathy, and compassion.
🗣️ Breaking Down Stigma
Misunderstandings about dementia can sometimes lead to isolation or stigma.
We can help change this by:
- 💜 Listening patiently and respectfully
- 💜 Avoiding assumptions about what a person can or cannot do
- 💜 Giving people time to communicate
- 💜 Including people living with dementia in conversations and activities
- 💜 Supporting families and carers
- 💜 Learning more about dementia and sharing reliable information
Small changes in how we communicate and interact can make a significant difference to someone’s experience.
🤝 Supporting Families and Carers
A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can affect an entire family.
Carers and loved ones may experience emotional, physical, and practical challenges as they support someone through changes in their health. They also deserve understanding, support, and opportunities to look after their own wellbeing.
No one should feel that they have to navigate the journey alone.
Access to appropriate healthcare, community services, information, and support can help individuals and families manage the challenges they face.
🌿 Building Dementia-Friendly Communities
A dementia-friendly community is one where people living with dementia are treated with dignity, included in everyday life, and supported to remain connected to their community for as long as possible.
We can all contribute by being patient, kind, understanding, and willing to learn.
Whether it’s helping someone who is confused, taking time to listen, or simply treating someone with respect, our actions can help create a more welcoming environment for everyone.
Together, We Can Make a Difference
This World Alzheimer’s Day, let’s continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and recognise the experiences of people living with dementia and those who care for them.
Everyone deserves to feel valued, respected, included, and supported — at every stage of life. 💜
