💜 World Sepsis Day: Raising Awareness, Recognising the Signs & Acting Early
Today, Donegal Women’s Centre recognises World Sepsis Day and the importance of raising awareness about sepsis, its warning signs, and the need for early recognition and treatment.
Sepsis is a serious and potentially life-threatening response to an infection. It can develop quickly and requires urgent medical attention. Knowing what to look out for and acting promptly can make an important difference.
💜 What Is Sepsis?
Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to an infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.
Sepsis can sometimes be difficult to recognise because its symptoms can vary and may initially resemble other illnesses. This is why awareness is so important.
🩺 Know the Warning Signs
Possible signs of sepsis can include:
- 💜 A high or very low temperature, or feeling unusually cold
- 💜 Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
- 💜 A fast heartbeat
- 💜 Confusion, disorientation, or unusual drowsiness
- 💜 Feeling extremely unwell
- 💜 Passing very little urine
- 💜 Pale, mottled, or unusually cold skin
Not everyone will experience the same symptoms, and these signs can have other causes. However, if someone has an infection and appears seriously unwell or is getting worse quickly, seek urgent medical attention.
⏱️ Early Recognition Matters
Sepsis can progress rapidly, so it is important not to ignore a significant deterioration in someone’s condition.
Trust your instincts if you are concerned about yourself or someone you care about. If you think someone may have sepsis, seek urgent medical help and explain that you are concerned about sepsis.
Early recognition and appropriate treatment can improve outcomes.
🤝 Supporting Individuals and Families
Sepsis can have a significant impact on individuals and their families. Recovery may take time, and some people can experience ongoing physical or emotional difficulties after a serious illness.
Compassion, patience, and access to appropriate healthcare and support can help people and families through recovery.
World Sepsis Day provides an opportunity not only to raise awareness but also to recognise the experiences of those affected and the dedication of healthcare professionals who provide care during serious illness.
Together, We Can Raise Awareness
This World Sepsis Day, let’s take a moment to learn about sepsis, share reliable information, and remember the importance of acting quickly when someone becomes seriously unwell.
Know the signs. Trust your concerns. Seek help.
Together, we can promote greater awareness, compassion, and care for individuals and families affected by sepsis. 💜
