🩸 Haemochromatosis Awareness Week 🩸
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we are committed to raising awareness of important health issues that affect women and families across our community. This week, we are highlighting Haemochromatosis Awareness Week—a vital opportunity to educate and inform about a condition that is more common than many people realise.
Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition where the body absorbs too much iron from food. Over time, this excess iron builds up in organs such as the liver, heart, and pancreas, which can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.
The challenge with haemochromatosis is that symptoms are often subtle and can be mistaken for other conditions. Many people may be living with it without even knowing.
⚠️ Common symptoms include:
- Persistent fatigue and low energy
- Joint pain
- Abdominal discomfort
- Brain fog or mood changes
- Unexplained changes in skin tone
Early detection is key. When diagnosed in time, haemochromatosis can be managed effectively with simple treatments, helping people to live full and healthy lives.
💡 If you have a family history or are experiencing symptoms, it’s important to speak with your GP. A simple blood test can provide clarity and potentially prevent long-term complications.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we believe that knowledge empowers better health. By sharing information and encouraging early testing, we hope to support stronger, healthier communities throughout Donegal.
