16 Days of Activism 2022

The official UN Commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is 23 November 2022. We would like to take this opportunity to announce our participation in #16DaysOfActivism2022, taking place November 25th-Dec 10th with our social media initiative: Join Us.
Women, girls and allies in Donegal are invited to post their support on feed & stories with the hashtag #JoinUsDWC
We ask that you dedicate a daily self-care task to raising awareness of Gender Based Violence in our community. Opening the conversation, showing you are there for anyone experiencing GBV is vital to empower them to find a way out of it. So many women and girls are unable to exert control over their day.
It could be your midmorning cuppa, a walk outside or even a selfie
#16DaysOfActivism2022 kicks off today and our first #JoinUsDWC self care task is taking time for a cuppa. The luxury of having time for tea or coffee and a catch up with a friend is not afforded equally to all women.

#16DaysOfActivism2022 continues with our second #JoinUsDWC self care task – connecting with a furry friend.
Established research has shown that violence toward pets both correlates with domestic violence toward humans, and is also a tool of domestic abuse — violent members of the household will threaten to hurt or actually hurt a companion animal as a method of control and a form of emotional violence. However that might look, many women spend so much mental (not to mention physical) energy living in fear, leaving them unable to honour their body with movement.

#16DaysOfActivism2022 continues with today’s #JoinUsDWC self care task – treating ourselves to a blow dry.
For some women, a trip to the hairdresser is the only time they are not being supervised by their partner. It is for that reason that initiatives like Shear Haven were set up by hair stylist and survivor, Liz McKeown, where there are opportunities to seek help during a hair appointment. Whether you hit the town in your best glam, have a walk together or just FaceTime, maintaining the female friendships in your life is good for the soul. Often, abusers seek to isolate their victims from their social network, especially if they have good friends who are likely to call out controlling behaviour.

#16DaysOfActivism2022 continues with today’s #JoinUsDWC self care task – Journalling.
Having a private journal where we can express gratitude, work through trauma or even record our days is a privilege. For some, the idea of spending that time with their own hopes and dreams would simply not be allowed. Have gratitude that you CAN have gratitude.

#16DaysOfActivism2022 continues with today’s #JoinUsDWC self care task – a healthy meal.
We cannot heal if we don’t fuel ourselves with the best nourishment we can. Though some days a freezer meal is all we are able to manage, it’s important to try and make something fresh and hearty every now and then (especially during a Donegal December!).

It could be a full “queen bath” where you soak, buff, condition, the works… or maybe its a 10 minute sheet mask in bed. Whatever works for you, you deserve it
