Endometriosis Awareness Month: Raising Awareness and Offering Support
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on a condition that affects an estimated 1 in 10 women worldwide. Despite its prevalence, endometriosis remains underdiagnosed and often misunderstood, leaving many women struggling in silence.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we are committed to providing support, information, and resources to women living with endometriosis, helping them navigate the physical, emotional, and social challenges it can bring.
Understanding Endometriosis
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, often causing pain, heavy periods, fatigue, and, in some cases, infertility. The severity and symptoms vary widely, and the condition can impact every aspect of a woman’s life.
Common symptoms include:
Chronic pelvic pain
Pain during menstruation or ovulation
Pain during sexual activity
Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
Fatigue and digestive issues
Difficulty conceiving
Many women live with these symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis, which can be emotionally and physically exhausting.
The Emotional Impact
Endometriosis is not just a physical condition—it can take a significant toll on mental health. Living with chronic pain, disrupted routines, and the uncertainty of the condition can lead to anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation.
During Endometriosis Awareness Month, it is important to acknowledge these emotional challenges and to support women in accessing care and guidance.
Support and Counselling at Donegal Women’s Centre
Donegal Women’s Centre offers counselling and support services for women affected by endometriosis. Our trained counsellors provide a safe, confidential space to discuss not only the physical impact of the condition but also the emotional and social challenges it brings.
Counselling can help women to:
Manage the emotional impact of chronic pain and symptoms
Navigate the challenges of living with a long-term health condition
Build coping strategies and resilience
Access support for relationships, work, and daily life
We aim to empower women to take control of their wellbeing and to provide practical and emotional support throughout their journey.
Raising Awareness
Endometriosis Awareness Month is a call to action for communities, healthcare providers, and society as a whole to better understand and support women with this condition. Raising awareness helps reduce stigma, promotes early diagnosis, and ensures women receive the care they need.
You Are Not Alone
If you are living with endometriosis, it’s important to know that support is available. Donegal Women’s Centre is here to provide guidance, counselling, and a safe space to talk about your experiences. You do not have to face this condition alone.
