International HPV Awareness Day: Protecting Women’s Health
International HPV Awareness Day is observed on March 4th each year to raise awareness about Human Papillomavirus (HPV), one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. HPV can lead to serious health issues, including cervical cancer, other genital cancers, and genital warts, yet it is largely preventable through vaccination, regular screening, and education.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we are dedicated to empowering women with knowledge, access to resources, and support to protect their health and wellbeing.
Understanding HPV
HPV is a group of viruses that can infect the genital areas, mouth, and throat. Most HPV infections clear on their own, but some high-risk strains can cause cellular changes that may lead to cervical or other cancers if left undetected.
Key points every woman should know:
HPV is extremely common, and most sexually active people will get it at some point.
High-risk HPV types can cause cervical, anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and throat cancers.
Low-risk types can cause genital warts.
HPV infections often show no symptoms, which is why regular screening is crucial.
Prevention and Screening
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent HPV-related diseases. The HPV vaccine is recommended for adolescents but can also benefit adults up to 45 years old in some cases.
Regular cervical screening (smear tests or HPV tests) is essential for early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Women are encouraged to follow national screening guidelines and speak with their healthcare providers about their risk and options.
The Emotional Impact
A diagnosis or concern about HPV can cause anxiety, embarrassment, or worry about relationships and sexual health. Emotional support is an important aspect of overall wellbeing, helping women cope with stress and make informed health decisions.

Raising Awareness
International HPV Awareness Day is a reminder of the importance of education, prevention, and early detection. By spreading awareness, we can reduce the stigma around HPV, encourage vaccination, and promote regular screening to protect women’s health.

Your health is your right, and taking steps to protect it is a form of self-care and empowerment.
