International Women’s Day 2026: Raising Awareness About Alcohol Industry Tactics
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we are proud to be part of the growing movement for healthier communities by joining the i-Mark initiative. Through this partnership, we support efforts to challenge the influence of the alcohol industry on public health, wellbeing, and policy.
As we mark International Women’s Day 2026, we are sharing an important short video that highlights some of the less visible and often predatory tactics used by the alcohol industry, particularly in how alcohol is marketed to women. The video also presents key facts about alcohol and women’s health—information that rarely appears in alcohol advertisements or on industry-funded websites.
Why This Matters
The global alcohol industry invests heavily in marketing strategies designed to normalise and promote alcohol consumption. In recent years, many of these campaigns have increasingly targeted women through branding, messaging around empowerment, and lifestyle marketing.
However, these campaigns often omit important information about the health risks associated with alcohol consumption for women. Research has shown that women can experience alcohol-related harm differently and, in some cases, more severely than men due to biological and physiological differences.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, set by the United Nations, is “Rights, Justice, Action” for all women and girls. Our short film explores how certain practices of the alcohol industry may undermine these principles by contributing to health risks and influencing public narratives around alcohol.
Watch and Share
We invite you to take two minutes to watch and share the short video:
“The Alcohol Industry’s Dirty Little Secrets.”
The video sheds light on tactics used by the industry and highlights facts about alcohol and women’s health that are often overlooked. By sharing this information, we can help spark conversations and raise awareness about the broader impact of alcohol marketing on women and communities.
Your support in watching and sharing the video can help amplify this message and encourage more people to think critically about how alcohol is marketed and discussed in society.
Building a Movement for Healthier Communities
The i-Mark initiative works with organisations across communities to reduce the influence of the alcohol industry on health and public policy. By joining the initiative, organisations demonstrate their commitment to promoting evidence-based information and protecting community wellbeing.
A new i-Mark website is currently in development, and online Champions Training will take place in May for organisations interested in signing up and adopting the i-Mark.
We would love to see more community groups, organisations, and advocates getting involved. Each organisation that joins strengthens a growing movement dedicated to creating SAFER communities free from alcohol industry influence.
