Is Technology Becoming the Newest Tool of Coercive Control?
Technology has transformed the way we communicate, work, and connect with others. Our phones, social media accounts, apps, and smart devices have become part of everyday life. But for some people, technology can also become a tool used to monitor, intimidate, threaten, and control.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is an increasingly recognised form of coercive control where digital devices and online platforms are used to harass, track, manipulate, or isolate someone. It can take many forms, including unwanted monitoring of messages or online activity, tracking someone’s location without consent, controlling access to accounts, sharing private information, or using smart devices to create fear and intimidation.
For those experiencing abuse, technology can make it harder to feel safe and free. A phone that should provide connection can become a source of anxiety. Social media platforms that are designed to bring people together can be misused to threaten, shame, or control. Even everyday devices within the home can potentially be used in ways that invade privacy and undermine a person’s sense of security.
Recognising the signs of technology-facilitated abuse is an important step in understanding what is happening and seeking support. Some warning signs may include:
- Someone repeatedly demanding access to your phone, accounts, or passwords.
- Being monitored through location tracking or digital devices without your agreement.
- Receiving threatening, controlling, or abusive messages online.
- Someone using technology to isolate you from friends, family, or support networks.
- Feeling afraid of how someone may use your digital information against you.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we have been delivering trauma-informed services and programmes to women across County Donegal since 1989. We support women to recognise abuse, rebuild confidence, access information, and find the help they deserve in a safe and supportive environment.
Abuse can take many forms, and understanding how technology can be misused is an important part of staying informed and supporting others. Awareness is the first step. Knowing the signs could make a meaningful difference — for you or for someone you know.
