Not Every Form of Abuse Is Visible — But Could Technology Be Hiding the Signs?
When we think of abuse, we often think of what can be seen. But not all harm leaves visible marks. In today’s digital world, technology can be misused as a tool of control, surveillance, and intimidation.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is a growing form of coercive control where devices and online platforms are used to monitor, manipulate, harass, or restrict someone’s freedom. It can include tracking a person’s location, monitoring their phone, controlling access to online accounts, reading private messages, or using technology to create fear and anxiety.
The absence of visible injuries does not mean abuse is not happening. A person may appear to be connected and online, while privately experiencing a loss of privacy, independence, and control over their own digital life.
Some signs that someone may be experiencing technology-facilitated abuse could include:
- Feeling afraid to use their phone or access their accounts.
- Seeming anxious about their online activity or who may be monitoring them.
- Having someone else control passwords, devices, or access to information.
- Receiving unwanted messages, threats, or demands through digital platforms.
- Feeling constantly watched or unable to make decisions freely.
Technology should support connection and independence — not be used as a way to control or intimidate.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we provide confidential, trauma-informed services and support to women across County Donegal. We are here to help women recognise abuse, access support, and take steps towards safety and empowerment.
Awareness is an important first step. By understanding the signs of technology-facilitated abuse, we can better support ourselves and those around us.
