September Is World Suicide Prevention Month
Know the Signs
Sometimes, someone who is struggling may not say that they need help.
They may not know how to put their feelings into words, or they may worry about being a burden to others. That’s why it’s important to notice changes in behaviour and take them seriously.
Someone may be struggling if they:
- Withdraw from family and friends
- Lose hope or feel there is no way forward
- Stop enjoying things they once loved
- Feel like a burden to others
- Talk about having no purpose or reason to carry on
- Give away treasured or meaningful belongings
One sign on its own does not necessarily mean someone is suicidal, but a noticeable change in someone’s behaviour is worth checking in about.
Trust your instincts.
Ask how they are doing.
Listen without judgement.
Stay connected.
Let them know you care.
You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, a simple conversation or knowing that someone is there can make a life-changing difference.
Reach out. Listen. Stay connected.
