Smart Devices. Shared Accounts. Hidden Control.
Could Everyday Technology Be Used as a Tool of Domestic Abuse?
Technology is part of everyday life. Smart devices, online accounts, apps, and connected services can make life more convenient — but they can also be misused as tools of coercive control.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is a modern form of abuse where technology is used to monitor, intimidate, restrict, or control another person’s life. What may appear to be convenient, caring, or “just staying connected” can become a way to invade someone’s privacy and limit their independence.
Ask yourself:
📱 Is someone insisting on access to your phone, passwords, or online accounts?
🏠 Are smart home devices being used to monitor your movements, routines, or activities?
📍 Is your location being tracked without your knowledge or consent?
🔑 Are shared accounts being used to control your finances, communications, or online activity?
💬 Do you feel like you are constantly being watched or expected to explain every notification, message, or online interaction?
These behaviours are not about care, trust, or protection. They are about power and control.
Everyone has the right to privacy, independence, and safety — including in their digital life.
Technology should make life easier, not take away your freedom.
