Standing Against Racism: International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
Every year on 21st March, the world observes the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination—a day to reaffirm our commitment to equality, human rights, and justice for all. At Donegal Women’s Centre, we stand firmly against racism and discrimination in all its forms, recognising that a fair society requires active awareness and action.
Why This Day Matters
The day commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville massacre in South Africa, where 69 peaceful protesters were killed while demonstrating against apartheid laws. It serves as a powerful reminder that racial discrimination has devastating consequences and that we must all work together to challenge inequality wherever it exists.
Racial Equality as a Human Right
Racial discrimination is not only morally wrong—it is a violation of human rights. Every individual has the right to live free from prejudice, harassment, and systemic inequality. Promoting racial equality strengthens communities, ensures fairness, and empowers everyone to reach their potential, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background.
Taking Action in Our Community
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. We encourage our community to:
Educate themselves about racism and its impact on individuals and society.
Challenge prejudiced attitudes, language, and behaviours whenever they arise.
Support policies, programs, and initiatives that promote racial equality and inclusion.
A Call to Reflection and Action
The elimination of racial discrimination is not the responsibility of a single day—it is an ongoing effort. On this day, we reflect on our shared humanity, commit to listening, learning, and acting, and reaffirm our dedication to building a community where diversity is celebrated and every person is treated with dignity and respect.
