Technology-Facilitated Abuse: The Growing Threat We Need to Talk About
Technology has transformed the way we live, work, and connect with others. Our devices and online platforms can bring convenience, support, and connection — but for some people, technology has also become a tool used to enable abuse.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is an increasingly recognised form of coercive control. It can involve tracking someone’s location, monitoring messages, demanding passwords, controlling online accounts, or using smart devices and digital tools to intimidate, threaten, or restrict someone’s freedom.
The abuse may not always be visible, but its impact is real.
Ask yourself:
- Is someone monitoring your phone or online activity without your consent?
- Do you feel pressured to share passwords, account details, or your location?
- Are you afraid of missing a call or message because of how someone might react?
- Do you feel like you are constantly being watched, checked, or expected to explain your actions?
These behaviours are not about trust, care, or protection. They are about power and control.
By speaking openly about Technology-Facilitated Abuse, we can help more women recognise the signs, understand what is happening, and access support when they need it.
If you or someone you know is experiencing Technology-Facilitated Abuse, Donegal Women’s Centre provides confidential, trauma-informed support to women across County Donegal.
