Technology Should Connect Us — Not Control Us
When does staying connected become being controlled?
Technology is part of our everyday lives. It helps us communicate, work, build relationships, and access support. But when technology is used to monitor, intimidate, isolate, or manipulate someone, it can become a tool of abuse.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is a form of coercive control where digital devices, online platforms, and connected technologies are used to create fear, pressure, or restrict someone’s independence.
It can include:
📱 Checking your phone, messages, or online activity without your consent.
📍 Tracking your location or movements.
🔑 Demanding access to passwords, accounts, or private information.
💬 Sending controlling, threatening, or intimidating messages.
🚫 Using social media or online platforms to isolate you from friends, family, or support.
👀 Monitoring your online activity or creating fear around your digital life.
These behaviours are not about care, trust, or protection. They are about power and control.
Everyone deserves to feel safe — not watched.
Connected — not controlled.
Donegal Women’s Centre has been delivering trauma-informed services and programmes to women across County Donegal since 1989.
