Understanding Technology-Facilitated Abuse
Technology should help you feel connected, not controlled.
T
Technology plays an important role in our daily lives, helping us communicate, work, and stay connected. However, when technology is used to monitor, intimidate, isolate, or manipulate someone, it can become a tool of abuse.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse is a growing form of coercive control that uses digital devices, online platforms, and connected technologies to exercise power over another person’s life.
Knowing the signs can help us recognise when technology is being misused:
📱 Constantly checking your phone or demanding to see your messages.
📍 Tracking your location without your knowledge or consent.
🔑 Demanding access to your passwords, emails, or social media accounts.
🚫 Controlling who you can contact or interact with online.
💬 Sending aggressive, intimidating, or controlling texts and messages.
👀 Monitoring your online activity through social media, apps, or digital devices.
These behaviours are not signs of love, trust, or protection. They are signs of power and control.
Technology should support your independence, privacy, and safety — not be used to create fear or restrict your choices.
