Valentine’s Day Reminder: Love Shouldn’t Hurt
Valentine’s Day is often filled with messages of romance, flowers, and grand gestures of love. But it’s also an important time to pause and reflect on what real love truly looks like.
Because love should never hurt.
Sometimes abuse doesn’t begin with bruises. It begins with words. With control. With fear. With moments that are brushed off, minimised, or excused.
If your partner says things like:
“You’re too sensitive.”
“You look ridiculous.”
“You made me do it.”
“Shut up.”
“It was only a push.”
“It’s because I love you.”
“Are you stupid or something?”
“You’re worthless.”
“No one will believe you.”
“It won’t happen again.”
“You’re mine.”
“You’ll never manage without me.”
“I’ll always find you.”
“I’m the only one you need.”
“Who else would want you?”
“You’re a bad mother.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It was only a slap.”
Please know this: this is not love.
Abuse can be emotional, verbal, psychological, physical, financial, or coercive. It often comes wrapped in apologies, promises, and declarations of love. But love does not demean, control, frighten, or harm.
Love is respect.
Love is safety.
Love is freedom.
You deserve to feel secure, valued, and heard. You deserve kindness without conditions. You deserve a life free from fear.
