Your Phone Shouldn’t Be a Weapon — Could Someone Be Using Technology to Control You?
Technology is designed to help us connect, communicate, and make life easier. But when it is misused by someone else, it can become a tool for monitoring, intimidation, and control.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse occurs when digital devices, online platforms, or smart technology are used as part of a pattern of coercive control. It can leave someone feeling watched, restricted, anxious, or afraid.
Technology-Facilitated Abuse can include:
📱 Checking your phone, messages, or apps without your permission.
📍 Tracking your location or movements.
🔑 Demanding passwords or access to your online accounts.
💬 Monitoring your messages, social media, or online activity.
📷 Using cameras, apps, or smart devices to intimidate, monitor, or control you.
These behaviours are not signs of love, trust, or care. They are signs of digital control and can be part of a wider pattern of coercive control and abuse.
Everyone has the right to privacy, independence, and safety — both offline and online. Recognising the signs of technology-facilitated abuse is an important first step towards understanding what is happening and finding support.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we provide confidential, trauma-informed services and support to women across County Donegal. We are here to listen, support, and help women access the information and assistance they need.
If you or someone you know is experiencing Technology-Facilitated Abuse, support is available.
