☀️ Why Summer Can Be Harder for Women ☀️
Summer is often shown as a season of freedom, happiness, and ease — long evenings, holidays, social plans, and time spent with family and friends. But for many women, the reality can feel very different.
Instead of being a time of rest and enjoyment, summer can bring added pressure and emotional strain.
Longer days and school holidays can disrupt routines and increase caregiving responsibilities. Financial pressures can feel more intense with rising costs, travel expectations, and the pressure to “make the most” of the season. For others, isolation can deepen when usual supports are less available, or when time is spent in difficult or unsafe relationships.
On top of this, there is often an unspoken expectation that summer should feel light and happy. When someone is already struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, or uncertainty, this pressure to appear “fine” can make things even harder.
The truth is simple: summer doesn’t feel easy for everyone — and that’s okay.
It’s important to recognise and validate those experiences rather than hide them.
💜 Your feelings are valid.
💜 It’s okay to ask for support.
💜 You don’t have to face challenges alone.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we understand that every woman’s experience is unique. Life can feel overwhelming at times, and no one should feel they have to manage those feelings in isolation. Whether you are dealing with emotional distress, loneliness, mental health challenges, or a difficult personal situation, support is available.
Reaching out is not a sign of weakness — it is a step towards support, clarity, and care.
This summer, we encourage women to be gentle with themselves, to acknowledge how they feel without judgement, and to remember that help is always within reach.
