❤️ European Restart a Heart Day: Every Second Counts ❤️
Would you know what to do if someone suddenly collapsed and was not breathing normally?
European Restart a Heart Day is an important reminder that knowing basic CPR and understanding how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) can give you the confidence to act when someone’s life may be at risk.
In a cardiac arrest, every second matters. Taking action while waiting for emergency services to arrive can make a vital difference.
🚨 What to Do If Someone Collapses
If someone suddenly collapses and is not breathing normally, act quickly:
📞 1. Call 999
Call 999 and ask for an ambulance. Put your phone on speaker if possible so you can follow the emergency call handler’s instructions while helping the person.
❤️ 2. Start CPR
Begin CPR as soon as possible.
Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest, following the instructions given by the emergency call handler if available.
You do not need to be a medical professional to start CPR. Taking action is better than doing nothing.
⚡ 3. Use an AED
If an AED (defibrillator) is available, use it as soon as possible.
AEDs are designed to guide you through the process using clear spoken instructions. You do not need to be an expert to use one.
👥 4. Keep Going
Continue CPR and follow the AED’s instructions until:
- Professional medical help arrives
- The person starts breathing normally
- You are told to stop by an emergency professional
If other people are nearby, ask someone to find an AED and another person to call 999, if this has not already been done.
🌸 Learning CPR Can Give You Confidence
Many people worry that they might not know what to do in an emergency. Learning CPR and basic first aid can help replace some of that uncertainty with practical knowledge and confidence.
A CPR or first-aid course can teach you valuable skills that may one day help you respond to an emergency involving a family member, friend, colleague or even a stranger.
You don’t have to be an expert to make a difference. Knowing what to do — and being willing to act — can be incredibly important.
💜 Stronger Skills, Safer Communities
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we believe that knowledge and confidence can empower women and contribute to stronger, safer communities.
Learning practical skills such as CPR and first aid is one way we can all become better prepared to support those around us when it matters most.
European Restart a Heart Day is a reminder that every one of us can learn the skills that could potentially help save a life.
❤️ Learn the Skills. Be Prepared. Help Save a Life.
Consider taking a CPR or first-aid course and encourage others to do the same.
You never know when those skills might be needed.
