💜🗣️ DLD Awareness Day: Understanding Developmental Language Disorder 🗣️💜
DLD Awareness Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and to improve understanding of how it can affect children and adults.
DLD is a lifelong condition that affects a person’s ability to understand and/or use spoken language. It can have an impact on communication, learning, relationships and everyday activities.
However, having DLD does not define a person’s abilities or potential. With the right understanding, encouragement and support, people with DLD can learn, communicate and thrive. 🌱
🔎 Recognising Some Possible Signs
DLD can look different from person to person, and communication difficulties may vary depending on someone’s age and circumstances.
Some signs may include:
- 💬 Difficulty finding the right words
- 👂 Trouble understanding questions or instructions
- 🗣️ Difficulty explaining ideas or telling stories
- 📚 Challenges with reading, writing or learning
- 🤝 Finding it difficult to follow conversations
- 💭 Difficulty expressing thoughts, feelings or needs clearly
Recognising these challenges can help us respond with patience and understanding rather than making assumptions about someone’s abilities.
💜 Communication Difficulties Do Not Reflect Intelligence
One of the most important messages of DLD Awareness Day is that communication difficulties do not reflect a person’s intelligence.
Someone may know exactly what they want to say but struggle to find the words to express it. They may need additional time to process information, understand what has been said or organise their thoughts.
Taking the time to listen and communicate in a supportive way can make a significant difference.
🌸 How Can We Support Someone With DLD?
There are simple things we can all do to make communication more comfortable and inclusive.
👂 Give People Time
Allow someone the time they need to express themselves. Avoid rushing them or immediately stepping in to answer for them.
💜 Listen Patiently
Give the person your full attention and avoid finishing their sentences unless they ask for help.
🗣️ Communicate Clearly
Use clear and straightforward language where appropriate. Breaking information into smaller steps can sometimes make it easier to understand.
🌱 Be Supportive
Avoid making assumptions about what someone can or cannot do. Focus on the individual and the support that helps them communicate most effectively.
🤝 Encourage Appropriate Support
If you have concerns about a child’s language development or an adult’s communication difficulties, encourage them to speak with an appropriate healthcare or communication professional who can offer further guidance and support.
🌍 Creating More Inclusive Communities
Awareness can help us build communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, communicate and feel valued.
For people living with DLD, understanding and patience from family members, friends, teachers, colleagues and the wider community can help reduce frustration and create more positive experiences.
At Donegal Women’s Centre, we believe in creating inclusive and welcoming communities where women, children and families feel supported, respected, listened to and empowered. 💜
DLD Awareness Day reminds us that communication is about more than words. It is about connection, understanding and making sure every person has the opportunity to be heard.
✨ Take the Time to Listen
Whether someone communicates easily or needs a little more time and support, everyone deserves to be listened to and understood.
💜 Understanding starts with communication.
