Why Summer Can Be Harder for Women
Summer is often associated with sunshine, holidays, family outings, and carefree days. Social media feeds fill with images of beach trips, barbecues, and happy moments spent with loved ones. It can seem like everyone is enjoying a perfect season.
However, for many women, summer can bring its own unique challenges.
While the warmer weather and longer days can be uplifting, the summer months can also create additional pressures that impact mental health and wellbeing. School holidays often mean increased childcare responsibilities and less personal time. Rising household costs, holiday expenses, and financial pressures can add extra stress. Changes to daily routines may leave some women feeling isolated or disconnected from their usual support networks.
For women caring for children, elderly relatives, or family members with additional needs, the demands of summer can be exhausting. The expectation to create happy memories while balancing work, home life, and caregiving responsibilities can feel overwhelming.
For others, summer may highlight feelings of loneliness. Friends and family may be travelling, social groups may pause regular activities, and the longer days can sometimes intensify feelings of isolation rather than ease them.
Women experiencing difficult relationships, domestic abuse, or coercive control can face additional challenges during school holidays and periods when families spend more time together. What appears to be a carefree season from the outside may feel very different behind closed doors.
There is also the pressure that summer often brings to be happy, active, social, and making the most of every moment. When reality doesn’t match these expectations, feelings of anxiety, stress, guilt, or low mood can become even more difficult to manage.
The truth is that it’s okay if summer doesn’t feel easy.
It’s okay if you’re struggling.
It’s okay if you’re not feeling the way you think you “should” feel.
Your feelings are valid, and you don’t have to face challenges alone.
